Clinic Information:
1. Be sure to fill out the first three lines of your teacher recommendation forms before giving them to your current teachers. I must have them back right away! First cuts will be decided using these forms, so make sure you give out all three of them!
2. Bring all required paperwork signed to the 1st clinic. This includes the release/permission form and your physical and medical forms! Without these forms, you will not be allowed to participate!
3. You will be given a numbered sticker at the first clinic. This is your number for all three clinics and must be worn at all times (fresh stickers will be given each day).
4. Clinics begin promptly at designated start times. If you are late, that will be noted.
5. You must wear appropriate clothing: cotton shorts, t-shirts, socks, and athletic shoes.
6. Gum chewing is not allowed!
7. Please be sure to stretch completely before attempting to do cheers, jumps, and tumbling.
8. Clinic time is limited, so make the most of it. Don’t be afraid to ask the older cheerleaders or coach for help. That is what clinics are for!
9. Think about whether you want to cheer for football or basketball. You do need to state what your first choice will be. Note: Football cheerleading does begin 1st week of August. If you tend to be out of town during that time, you may want to consider cheering for basketball.
10. Finally, cheerleading does have some costs that will be your responsibility if you make the squads. Here is an estimate of costs:
a. Cheer shoes ($50) Usually paid for via car washes and wash-a-thon fundraiser (one carwash will be held in June and one in August at O’Reillys)
b. Socks, bow, and briefs (about $25 total)
c. Cheer Gear (various costs) Not required
d. School Sport Fee- $80, $40 for reduced lunch students, $15 for free lunch students. THIS IS PAID DURING THE FOOTBALL or BASKETBALL season
**Fundraisers may help reduce some of these expenses**
Tryout Skills and Requirements:
1. Jumps—see website for photos
a. Sit Jump (also known as Toe Touch)
b. Front Hurdler
c. Pike
d. Herkie
2. Motions—Be stiff, tight, and snap all motions. Placements should be in correct positions as well.
3. Cheer—This is said one time and is longer and more complicated than the chant. You will be taught the motions during clinics.
Ready! (clasp) We’re back once again! To show you who’s on top! The best of the best, the Lancers won’t stop! Sit back and watch, We’ll blow you away! Perfection, that’s right, Number One today!
4. 2 Chants—This is repeated three times and is shorter and less complicated than the cheer. You will be taught the motions during clinics.
5. Cartwheel/Roundoff
6. Tumbling (back walk over, front/back handsprings, tucks, etc.)—this is not required, and must be done without spotting
7. Appearance—Hair should be pulled back in ponytail. No jewelry, and in proper attire.
8. Poise and Confidence—You need to be positioned and ready to begin. Be sure of yourself. Be sure to make eye contact with judges.
9. Pep and Smile—Cheerleaders are only effective if they show a lot of pep! A big smile makes a huge difference! Practice smiling just as you would practice everything else!
10 Voice and Rhythm—Be loud, NOT SQUEAKY! DO NOT SING cheers/chants. You should yell and say each word clearly as if you were trying to speak over people in a loud room.
